I have been a customer of Modesti's Independent Auto Repair in Culver City, CA for a little over a year. I found them on Angie's List and have always been impressed with their honesty, integrity and very fair prices. Because I was going to give my gently used MINI Cooper to my son (who is going out of state to school) I thought it would be a good idea to go to a dealership (dumb idea), have them do a diagnostic and then take my car to Modesti's to get the recommended repairs. I made the mistake of going to a MINI dealer in Los Angeles (I've never been there before) and dropped my car off early in the morning. I was told that the diagnostic would cost $389 (a lot of money...but that it would be applied to any repairs done to my car). I did not receive a call late that afternoon--as I was told--so I called them. I was told that there were problems with my car and that my "service" rep was trying to get MINI to pay for a portion of the costs. This was a shock because I've really taken great care of my MINI. My "service" rep promised to call me the next day. In the afternoon of the following day I hadn't heard anything--so I called and was told that I needed:1.) new clutch and possibly flywheel=$3900 for the "clutch assembly"2.) the oil pan was leaking; 3.) the cylinder head and gasket were leaking=$37004.) I needed coolant 5.) may need to machine the cylinder heads (I have no idea what that would have cost)6.) an alignment7.) 2 new front tires Total cost...I have no idea because I was only given a "guestimate" on the "clutch work" and work on the "leaky cylinder head gasket" Totaling $7600 for now.The other things that he told me about on the phone would be extra. My husband was ready to sell my beloved MINI and buy another car for my son.I called Danny at Modesti's and told him what was going on, and he explained a variety of things to me about how the tests were conducted and gave me some questions to ask dealer about the tests that were done on my car. When I spoke to my "service" rep at the MINI dealer about the oil leak and head gasket "repair", I was told that they did a test, which turned the green fluid blue which indicated there was a "major leak". I told the rep that I didn't have any oil on my garage floor, but that didn't seem to matter to him. I told the rep that I wasn't putting that kind of money (ultimately in excess of $8,000) into my car. I asked him what $389 (the cost of the diagnostic) would buy me and he told me "Nothing". I said, "You told me yesterday, that the cost of the diagnostic would be applied to work done". He told me that it would only be for the clutch work or the oil leak issue--the major items. I didn't even get a crummy quart of oil. The following morning I picked up my car and immediately took it over to Modesti's to have them repeat the tests and to do whatever my car needed. Danny--God Bless him--called me promptly that afternoon and told me that that he had "good news". I didn't need a clutch, nor did I need a cylinder head gasket or anything major. I needed a service, windshield wipers, some fluids and a light bulb. Everything totaled to approximately $600. I thought that Modesti's was great before, but now??? Wow!! I can't explain how happy I am with Modesti's, Danny (my awesome service rep) the mechanics and everyone associated with this wonderful company. They gave me the ability to give my son a safe car, keep my MINI in the family and save me over $8,000. If you want efficient, honest service from people who care about what they do...forget the dealers and go to Modesti's Auto Repair--they're the best!!Thanks Guys!!
